IMAP

This is the option for email services that are not in the provider list: a corporate mailbox on your own domain, a hosting provider, or your own mail server. In this case, the server parameters are entered manually.

Step 1. Gather the server parameters

You will need the addresses and ports of two servers: IMAP for receiving messages and SMTP for sending them.

Where to get them:

  • in your email provider's help center, in the "Email client settings" section;
  • from your system administrator, if the email is corporate;
  • in the settings of any email client already working on your computer or phone.

Typical values, unless your provider specifies otherwise:

Server Port Encryption
IMAP (incoming) 993 SSL/TLS
IMAP (incoming) 143 STARTTLS
SMTP (outgoing) 465 SSL/TLS
SMTP (outgoing) 587 STARTTLS

Step 2. Check access to the mailbox

  1. Make sure that IMAP access is allowed for the mailbox: some providers have it disabled by default.
  2. Find out whether an app password is needed. Many services do not accept the regular email password; in that case, you create one in the account's security settings and enter that password when connecting.

Step 3. Connect the account in WorkZeal

Open Settings — Email — Add — IMAP, enter the server addresses and ports from step 1, the login and password, and click Continue.

The login is almost always the full email address including the domain, not just the part before the @ sign.

If something went wrong

Alert

Error of Autification on IMAP serverWrong account name and/or password.

Meaning: authentication error on the IMAP server. Wrong account name and/or password.

Check the following, in order:

What to check Details
Login the full address with the domain; letter case matters
Password some providers require an app password rather than the email password
IMAP access whether it is allowed in the mailbox settings
Port and encryption the "port — encryption" pairs from step 1 cannot be mixed: 993 works with SSL/TLS, 143 with STARTTLS
Server address a typo in the host name produces the same error as a wrong password

If everything is correct but the connection still fails, ask your provider for the exact parameters for email clients: some servers require special settings or access from specific addresses.
